Staff Accountant

About This Role

Pocketbook Strategies is seeking a full time Staff Accountant. The Staff Accountant will be excited to leverage their interest in technology and software with a strong accounting background to execute significant touchpoints of the monthly accounting cycle for non-profit, electoral, and campaign clients. The ideal candidate will be an Accounts Payable expert, capable of owning the entire AP cycle from beginning to end. They'll possess a keen eye for detail, meticulously handling invoice receipt, coding, and payment processing while diligently adhering to financial controls. The staff accountant will be responsible for shepherding clients through the first 60% of the monthly accounting cycle by preparing workbooks and entering monthly transactions. They will be excited to grow and adapt their role using software and innovative accounting procedures as alongside the growth of Pocketbook and our clients.

Compensation: The starting salary for this role is $75,000-82,000 annually, commensurate with experience. This is a full time, exempt position.  Information about Pocketbook’s benefits plan can be found here.

Role Location: This role is fully remote (within the United States) with the expectation of attending team retreats and conferences 3-4 times a year. We currently have staff in Pacific and Eastern time zones.

Responsibilities

Monthly Accounting Cycle - 70%

  • Manage the comprehensive initial phase of the monthly close, including downloading, categorizing, and preparing financial workbooks for various clients.

  • Execute the initial coding of all financial transactions, applying appropriate general ledger accounts and categories to ensure transaction accuracy.

  • Proactively identify and resolve discrepancies in transactional data during the initial coding and import phases, maintaining high standards of data quality.

  • Act as a key client liaison to proactively gather necessary financial information and follow up on any incomplete client transactions or workbooks.

  • Ensure the timely and accurate flow of all financial data for both client reporting and internal accounts payable processes, contributing to a seamless month-end close.

  • Process accounts receivable and generate invoices, including those related to grants, ensuring accurate tracking and timely collection of funds.

Accounts Payable - 20%

  • Manage the full accounts payable cycle, from invoice receipt and coding to payment processing, ensuring accuracy and adherence to established financial controls.

  • Identify and implement process and procedure improvements within the A/P function to enhance efficiency, reduce discrepancies, and optimize payment workflows.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for vendor communications, resolving payment inquiries and discrepancies on behalf of clients to maintain strong vendor relationships.

  • Proactively engage with vendors to gather necessary information, clarify billing details, and ensure timely and accurate invoice submission, supporting seamless client operations.

  • Assist with 1099 processes at year’s end.

Financial Operations - 10%

  • Manage and improve the financial software and processes that Pocketbook uses to import and upload financial data from various sources (payroll, credit card’s, bank feed’s, etc) into the general ledger system (QBO).

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of GAAP and accrual based accounting; difference between nonprofit and for-profit accounting.

  • Extremely comfortable with Google Workspace and Quickbooks Online. 

  • At least 2 years of experience with full cycle nonprofit accounting.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Thrives in collaborative environments and values working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

  • Sense of grace and humor in the face of challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working at a multi-entity progressive political organization, or professional service firm serving progressive political organizations. 

  • Professional or volunteer experience with: community organizing, issue advocacy, political campaigning.  

  • Professional or volunteer experience with campaign finance compliance. 

  • Experience with payroll and benefits management.

  • Experience with Sage Intaact, Netsuite, Ramp, Rillet.
